You come in from work, drop all your bags at the door, kick off your shoes and plop on the couch!  You are beyond exhausted and have no motivation to move from your favorite cushion. You look over to turn the TV on and the flipping remote is on the other side of the coffee table! Grrr…

You don’t even have the energy to grab the remote, so how the heck do you have the energy and motivation to grab food out of the refrigerator and cook?!

Look…I feel you! Hey, I struggle with this too. Even when I get the spurt of energy to actually cook then there’s that whole “what do I cook?!” situation?! LOL!

If you are feeling tired and uninspired here are a few tips (and resources) that will make it much easier for you to source inspiration, which will definitely give you a little boost in the area of the “I just don’t feel like it!”

There are some things that you can do to set yourself up for success.  Prepare your kitchen knowing that you will most certainly be tired and lack the energy; and you aren’t going to want to put in the effort to cook on that random Tuesday evening even though you are starving and deep down, you don’t want take out to be an option because you are trying to make an attempt to be healthy, right?!

So, these tips to the rescue!!

  1. Shortcuts:

So one thing you need to know is that you will have to make sacrifices.  If the case is that you aren’t that into cooking and you are short on time and you are standing in that and not really open to making a lot of additional time, well then, you are going to have to pay to play in this scenario. If you take short cuts to food prep it will save you time but you will have to pay more.

What type of shortcuts am I suggesting?

— Pre-cut vegetables and produce:

This will save you time but as I mentioned earlier, will cost you a bit more than purchasing the produce and cutting it up yourself.

***When I thought the price was just outrageous for pre-cut options I would grab let’s say an onion and as soon as I got home from the store I would dice it myself and then store it away in the fridge and use it throughout the week as I would’ve the pre cut. So, this saved me a bit of time and money!

— Frozen vegetables:

Frozen vegetables are great to use because you can explore vegetables that may not necessarily be in season at the moment. This works because veggies are typically flash frozen at the peak of their freshness. Sometimes in fact, you may find that these may be a fresher option depending on your grocers current selection of produce.

Pro tip!!

A great shortcut is to purchase pre-cut, pre-diced meat like grilled chicken or steak from a burrito shop! Now, this is not something that may typically be on the menu, so just ask if it is an option!

2. Batch Cooking:

Many people get batch cooking confused with meal prep.  I actually have an entire video lesson about this for our Skinny Changes members. There is a distinct difference between the two. I suggest that if you are starting out on your wellness journey or rebooting healthy habits, you don’t just jump into meal prep but perfect the art of batch cooking.

Batch cooking is simply making a particular food in larger portions so that you take the portion that you need for a particular plate over many meals.  This cuts down having to take the time to prep certain staples throughout the week, especially high quality carbohydrates!

The fact is that when your time is pressed and you have no energy to cook but want to be healthy you need to take it one step at a time. You will become overwhelmed putting pressure on yourself thinking you have to make elaborate meals. You don’t. Ease into it and start slow!

3. Set it and forget it:

Another option are meals made in the crockpot.  Basically this option is a set it and forget it! Here are some great recipe options for you to give a try.  This is great because not only does it cut down on cook time, but it also helps you with purchasing food, especially fresh food as there is a less likely chance that it will go bad because you have a plan for how and when you will actually use them and they won’t just sit in your fridge and reach for them as it became overripe.
